Our Therapeutic Approach
Our clients, aged 14-22 come from backgrounds that span the spectrum of diversity. We help our clients build a personal philosophy of life through helping them resolve past issues, integrate their disparate influences and experiences, and create a system for understanding the world, functioning within it, and forging a successful and healthy life. We achieve this through a four-step process.
1. First, we meet every client where they are in their life. We embrace them as they are without judgment and meet them in their world.
2. Then, we try to understand each client’s entire experience and world. We learn who engages and interacts with them, and then talk to the relevant figures involved to get a better picture about what is going on for the client.
3. Next, if there is an immediate crisis, we look to stabilize the situation. We address concrete challenges, such as issues with housing, safety, or health. In that moment when the client is in crisis, we do not delve into deeper emotional issues; it is difficult or potentially impossible to focus on underlying issues until the immediate stressor is removed.
4. Lastly, we concentrate on the client’s emotional experience by offering therapy. Our staff specializes in therapy with teens who cannot articulate their feelings, who are grappling with issues of identity, and who may be undergoing emotional upheaval due to their developing identity and transition into adulthood. The therapeutic process between the client and social worker is often where the most intense work gets done. This generally takes place once a week in our therapeutic clinic and can last anywhere from a few weeks to many months.
In order to maintain our therapeutic approach with our clients, our staff benefits from periodic staff trainings to help widen our knowledge and learn new therapeutic techniques.
